Graynella Packer operates aboard the Mohawk

Collection of hourglasses representing amateur radio history

In the early 20th century, Graynella Packer served as a wireless operator for the United Wireless Telegraph Company aboard the steamship Mohawk along the U.S. Atlantic seaboard. As one of the few women in a predominantly male field, Packer’s role was pioneering and significant. She was responsible for managing wireless communications, including sending and receiving messages, maintaining equipment, and ensuring the smooth operation of the ship’s communication system. Packer’s contributions demonstrated the vital role of wireless operators in maritime safety and communication, and her work helped pave the way for greater inclusion of women in the field of wireless telegraphy and radio communications.
