In 1904, Horace G. Martin invented the first Vibroplex, a semi-automatic key, also known as a “bug,” which revolutionized telegraphy. The Vibroplex allowed operators to send Morse code at higher speeds with greater ease and accuracy than traditional straight keys. The device used a vibrating arm to automatically produce a series of dots, while the operator manually generated the dashes. This innovation significantly reduced operator fatigue and improved the efficiency of telegraph communication. The Vibroplex became widely popular among telegraphers and amateur radio operators, remaining an essential tool for high-speed Morse code transmission for many years.
