In 2016, the Parks on the Air (POTA) program was launched, creating an exciting platform for amateur radio operators to combine their love for radio communication with outdoor exploration. Inspired by the National Parks on the Air (NPOTA) event organized by the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) in 2016 to celebrate the National Park Service’s centennial, POTA encourages amateur radio operators to set up portable stations in national, state, and local parks.
Participants, known as “activators,” operate their radios from these locations, while “hunters” attempt to contact them from home or other locations. POTA fosters appreciation for nature and outdoor activities while promoting amateur radio. It has grown rapidly in popularity, providing operators with opportunities to explore new environments, engage in portable operations, and promote awareness of the natural and cultural heritage preserved in parks. The program’s emphasis on mobility, outdoor adventure, and community engagement has significantly enriched the amateur radio hobby.
