In 1969, the Amateur Radio Satellite Corporation (AMSAT) was formed, with the mission to advance amateur radio technology in space. The organization played a crucial role in continuing the legacy of Project OSCAR, which had successfully launched the first amateur radio satellite, OSCAR 1, in 1961.
