Amateur radio operators mobilize for Hurricane Maria

In 2017, Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico with devastating force, causing widespread destruction and a complete collapse of the island’s communication infrastructure. In response, amateur radio operators quickly mobilized to provide critical communication support. With power and telecommunications down, amateur radio became a lifeline for emergency responders and relief efforts.

Ham radio operators, both on the island and from mainland United States, established vital communication links. The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) coordinated with the American Red Cross to deploy a team of amateur radio operators equipped with HF and VHF/UHF radios. These volunteers played a crucial role in relaying information between Puerto Rico and emergency management agencies, coordinating relief efforts, and providing health and welfare messages for residents and their families.

The efforts of amateur radio operators during Hurricane Maria highlighted their ability to provide reliable, resilient communication in disaster situations. Their work not only helped facilitate immediate emergency response but also underscored the importance of amateur radio in disaster preparedness and response planning. The mobilization demonstrated the unique capabilities of amateur radio to assist when conventional communication systems fail, providing a critical service in the aftermath of one of the most devastating hurricanes in Puerto Rico’s history.
